Australia 2020 Submission

The Australian Federal Government has called for ideas to be considered at its 2020 summit. Here is a submission from Edentiti

Free access to electronic personal information

If the Internet is to truly take a stronger role in business-to-business and business-to-consumer commerce, it will need to become a more open medium for its users.

Right now it is economically and technically feasible for ALL organisations holding electronic personal information about an individual to allow that individual access to that information.  All that is lacking is the organisation’s desire to do so.

Access to such information can be provided via the phone or other physical devices attach to the Internet. It can be achieved in a privacy-friendly and secure way so that only the individual - or anyone the individual authorises - is allowed to access the information. It can also be done in such a way that the organisation holding the information can prevent it being passed to a third party.

The implications of requiring organisations to provide access to personal data are wide reaching. It will allow an individual to vote secretly for any resolution. It will increase privacy because most organisations will no longer have to keep identifying information about a person; it will increase trust and this in turn will increase commerce and interaction between people.
