Frequently asked questions

Is Edentiti identity verification legal?

Edentiti has obtained legal advice that the way it verifies the identity of an individual is legal.

Edentiti provides individuals with ways that they can prove assertions about themselves. If proved then these assertions establish a person's identity to differing confidence levels. The assertions that are used are that an individual asserts they have a relationship with a person or an organisation. Edentiti provides methods for individuals to prove those relationships.

These methods comply with laws relating to privacy and laws and regulations relating to identifiers and to rules of access to websites.

  • Edentiti complies with all privacy laws and principles established by the Australian Government.
  • Edentiti complies with the laws surrounding the use of Australian government identifiers. No government identifier is stored nor is used by Edentiti as an identifier. The individual uses their own identifiers for their own purposes and Edentiti itself does not store nor use any government identifier.
  • Edentiti provides a transmission route to publicly accessible websites to individuals and this is permitted.

How effective is voice for identification?

Voice Verification is the only biometric that can be easily implemented to accurately identify remote callers or website users.

Just as your fingerprint is unique so is your voiceprint.

Voice verification involves enrolling your voiceprint and then comparing your voice sample with the previously stored example.

We believe that the Edentiti Voice Verification system is more effective that a password or pin number system because our solution will actually confirm that you are the one entering your password.

Can a Voiceprint be a legal signature?

Yes. A voiceprint is a form of electronic signature typically attached to an electronic document or transaction. Electronic signatures have the same legal standing as a handwritten signature. Your voiceprint as a signature ensures that you are the originator of a message etc. See Deacons legal advice on the validity of electronic signatures.

Why does Edentiti Voice Verification keep my information private?

Your voiceprint is a digital representation of your voice and not just a recording.

It cannot be used for any other purpose.

How does Edentiti protect the privacy of an individual?

Privacy of the individual is critical to Edentiti and is the guiding principle in its design. The design includes the following.
  • An individual is always in control of their information. They make assertions that they have a relationship with other organisations or individuals. Edentiti helps an individual verify assertions and so verify their identity.
  • When an assertion is checked such as that an individual has a valid passport then the only information kept is a Yes or a No. The passport number is not stored unless the individual concerned agrees for Edentiti to store the passport number.
  • Whenever Edentiti is used the individual identifies themselves before they can view the data about themselves.
  • Information is only ever shared if the individual agrees to share it. In effect the individual owns the data because they control it.
  • Edentiti needs to only keep the way a person identifies themselves and any data used to identify an individual could be kept in a mobile phone or on your PC and downloaded when required. This is not done presently because of convenience and it would too great a leap for people and organisations to handle this concept at this time and so identification information is kept with Edentiti.
  • Other information about a person is kept in other data stores in other organisations - such as a bank - and is not accessible through Edentiti unless there is agreement both from the individual and the organisation holding the data.

How does an organisation integrate with Edentiti?

There are many ways for an organisation to integrate with Edentiti. The simplest is put a link on a website or in paper documentation pointing to Edentiti identification. In this case Edentiti will detect the company requesting and ask the person to identity themselves for the company. Once the identification is finished then an email is sent to the company telling them the identification has been completed.

Edentiti recommends that the companies with the appropriate technical ability interface to Edentiti through webservices as these are secure and can only be compromised if the organisation website and the Edentiti website are both compromised which is highly unlikely.

To find the best way for your organisation send us an email or call us and we will send more information.

Why will the ordinary public use Edentiti verification?

Edentiti is quick, simple, more secure, and people are increasingly comfortable with using the Internet.

Edentiti is a social networking website and there are many other popular networking sites. Examples are FaceBook, YouTube, Geni, LinkedIn etc.

Focus groups show that once they understand the purpose and utility of Edentiti people are very positive towards the concept - particularly when faced with the alternatives of identification such as id cards and face to face interviews.

Are there any alternatives available to Edentiti for identification services?

The only current online electronic competitors are database organisations but they have difficulty verifying private information such as date of birth. The have difficulty with currency of information and ongoing identification required by the AML/CTF legislation. The main competitor to Edentiti is inhouse identification (you have a store front or you get people to send in
signed documents). Some companies use other organisations to identify their customers. One such service is provided by AusPost but these only provide a one time identification and are relatively expensive. Edentiti also provides
ongoing identification through the use of voice prints and other second factor techniques. These facilities are not available with other identification techniques.
